Catastrophic Injuries

The Annual Survey of Football Injury Research 1931 - 2007, published by the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research, is the leading authority pertaining to catastrophic football injuries. NSSO presents this report as a resource that helps our members reduce the occurrence of catastrophic injuries. Here is a sampling of the information found in this report:

  • Tackling with the head down position caused cervical cord catastrophic injuries and also caused brain injuries with incomplete recovery
  • Rule changes in 1976 regarding "spearing" an opponent have helped to reduce the incidence of catastrophic injuries.
  • Improved medical care and better equipment will help to reduce catastrophic injuries. Contact should always be made with the head up and never with the top of the head or helmet. Initial contact should never be made with the head/helmet or face mask.
